Antique Victorian 9ct Gold & Turquoise Enamel Glazed Locket Pendant
This unusual antique locket pendant dates from the Victorian era. The locket is made of 9ct yellow gold and the front is enamelled in a vibrant blue enamel. The reverse of the locket has a pretty engraved design with a central blank cartouche (which could be engraved within initials). Inside there is a glazed locket compartment which contains a lock of hair; I have not tried removing the glass cover or hair myself but I believe a jeweller would be able to do this. The other half of the locket is empty. This locket is of the 9ct gold ‘back and front’ variety, which means that the front and back of the locket are 9ct gold but that the frame and inside securing rings are made of a gold coloured metal (which improves the locket’s strength and durability).
The locket measures 2.1cms x 1.6cms (excluding the top bale and ring) and it weighs 5.4g
As is often the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks; the locket has been professionally tested and is made of 9ct yellow gold ‘back and front’.
This antique locket is well over 130 years old and is in good condition for its age, showing some signs of age / wear / use. The enamelling is in very good condition with just one tiny area of missing enamel at the top. There are no dents to the back or front of the locket. The glass cover is in excellent condition and the lock of hair is in original condition. There is an area of slight irregularity and possibly a small historic repaired area on the back cover edge near the opening and also a slightly irregular finish to the front cover edging on the top half of the locket (minor). The inside of the back cover of the locket has some lining missing and is discoloured. The locket opens as it should and closes securely with a click. The top suspension ring has not been soldered closed.
