This pretty and decorative antique locket pendant dates from the late Victorian / Edwardian era and is made of 9ct gold. The front of the locket features the star and crescent moon motif; the moon is set with seed pearls and the star is centrally set with a garnet (either natural or paste). The locket opens to reveal two locket compartments which could house photos, a lock of hair etc. The locket compartments retain their original blue backing papers, inner securing rings and perspex type protective covers. The reverse of the locket has been engraved with a monogram which appears to be ‘JNH’; the monogram could probably be polished out. The locket is of the 9ct gold ‘back and front’ variety, which means that the front and back panels of the locket are made of 9ct gold and the inner securing rings and frame are made of a gold coloured metal (which improves the locket’s strength and durability).
The main oval part of the locket measures 2.5cms x 2cms; the locket has a total height of 3cms including the bale (but excluding the top suspension ring).
The locket weighs 4.4g
As is sometimes the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks; the locket has been professionally tested and is 9ct gold ‘back and front’ (see above for details).
This antique locket is well over 100 years old and is in good condition for its age, with no dents and showing just light signs of age / general wear. The pearls vary in shade and there is discolouration / bleaching to an area of the blue lining paper inside the locket on one half (the lining papers could easily be replaced and would be covered by photos anyway). The locket opens easily and closes securely with a click. The top suspension ring has not been soldered closed.
