This beautiful and detailed antique brooch dates from the Victorian era (around 1860 / 1870) and is made of tortoiseshell. The brooch is of a typical design, but is smaller in size than is usual which highlights the craftsmanship and makes it more wearable. The dome shaped brooch is set with gold and silver inlay in the form of flowers (possibly rose, peony and / or chrysanthemum) and is bordered by a gold scalloped design. The brooch has a base metal clasp and pin.
The brooch measures 2cms diameter and it weighs 2.8g
There are no hallmarks; the inlay tests as gold and silver and the brooch fittings are base metal.
This antique brooch is around 150 years old and is in very good condition for its age, with no damage and showing just light signs of age / general wear. There are no chips or damaged areas to the tortoiseshell and no missing inlay. The brooch clasp / pin are in working order; the pin is securely fitted but moves slightly from side to side at the hinge.
