This lovely, larger than average, antique heart locket pendant dates from the Victorian or Edwardian era and is made of 9ct gold. The front and back of the locket feature beautiful, ornate, floral engraving detail and one side has a blank, shield shaped cartouche, which could be engraved with initials. The gold has a rich, warm, mellow tone and is between yellow gold and rose gold in colour. This locket is of the 9ct gold ‘back and front’ variety, which means that the front and back covers are made of 9ct gold and the inner rings and frame are made of a gold coloured metal (which improves the locket’s strength and durability). Inside, there are two separate locket sections, each retaining the original protective glass cover, inner securing ring and blue satin backing. The locket compartments are ‘opened’ by gently prising off the inner heart shaped securing rings, placing a photo under the glass and gently pushing the heart shaped rings back into place.
The locket measures 3cms height (excluding the suspension bale and ring) x 2.9cms maximum width. The locket weighs 10.9g
As is often the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks; the locket has been professionally tested and is made of 9ct gold ‘back and front’.
This locket is well over 100 years old and is in very good condition for its age, with no dents or damage and showing just light signs of age / general wear. There are no dents to the gold, the glass covers are in very good condition. The blue satin backing fabric is a little frayed on the edge on one half. The locket opens easily and closes securely with a click. The top suspension ring has not been soldered closed.
