Rare, Collectable, Antique Elephant Hair Bracelet With 9ct Gold Fittings

£139.00

This rare antique bangle bracelet dates from the Victorian or Edwardian era and is made from woven elephant hair. The fittings / clasp are made of 9ct gold.

Elephant hair jewellery was popular around the 1880s - 1890s and was commissioned by travellers visiting India during the period of the British Raj. The hair was usually taken from the tail of the elephant and was thought to bring luck and prevent illness.

The bracelet has an internal circumference of 17cms / 6.75”

The bracelet weighs 6.0g

As is often the case with jewellery of this type there are no hallmarks; the fittings and clasp test as 9ct yellow gold

This antique bangle bracelet is well over 100 years old and is in good condition for its age, showing just light signs of age / general wear. The gold fittings & clasp are in very good condition with no dents. The push clasp opens easily and clicks securely closed. The central wire core of the bracelet is fully attached to the gold fittings at both ends; the elephant hair surrounding the central wire at one end is not 100% fully inserted inside the gold housing (this is not significant and I think is probably just the way the bracelet was made - see the last photo for detail).
