These unusual and individual antique earrings date from the Victorian era and are made of 9ct yellow gold and carved Whitby jet. Whitby jet is an organic gemstone formed from fossilized wood from approximately 183 million years ago. It’s found on the North Yorkshire coast in England, near a town called Whitby. It was popularised by Queen Victoria and was used a lot in Victorian mourning jewellery. Whitby jet is very lightweight so although these earrings look heavy, they aren’t.
Each Whitby jet orb measures 1.7cms diameter and the earrings have a combined weight of 7.1g (the earrings are not heavy to wear).
The back of each screw fitting is stamped ‘9CT’ for 9ct gold. The connecting fittings have not been tested and are not hallmarked (and may be gold plated / a gold coloured metal).
These antique earrings are in very good condition for their age, showing just light signs of age / general wear in the form of a few nicks to the facet edges in a few areas (not significant and difficult to detect due to the design and carving detail).
