Vintage Silver and Black Enamel 'Lucky Sweep' Charm
This sweet, small, vintage charm is made of solid silver and the front is enamelled in black. The charm is in the form of a ‘lucky sweep’.
Chimney sweeps are considered lucky as it’s believed that during the 1700s a chimney sweep saved the life of King George II by stopping his runaway horse and carriage. Because of this the king issued a Royal Decree that chimney sweeps were bringers of good luck and should be treated with respect. Chimney sweeps are still considered lucky to this day, in particular they are said to bring good luck and a happy future to a bride and groom if they are blessed by one on their wedding day.
The charm measures 1.3cms height (including the bale but excluding the top suspension ring) and it weighs 0.3g
As is sometimes the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks, but the charm tests as silver.
This vintage charm is in very good condition for its age, with no damage or enamel loss and showing just the lightest signs of age / general wear. The top suspension ring has not been soldered closed.
