Beautiful Antique Victorian 9ct Gold Locket Pendant
This beautiful antique locket pendant dates from the Victorian era and is made of 9ct gold. The gold has a lovely rich, mellow, tone and is somewhere between rose gold and yellow gold in colour. The locket has different engraving detail on each side which is loaded with symbolism: one of the flowers depicted is a peony, which represented honour, romance and a happy marriage in Victorian jewellery. The other flower is probably a convolvulus which represented bonds, memories and eternal sleep. One side of the locket has a blank cartouche which could be engraved with initials. The locket is fitted with a lovely facetted 9ct gold suspension ring. The inside of the locket is empty.
The locket is of the 9ct gold ‘back and front’ variety, which means that the front and back panels are made of 9ct gold and the inner frame is a gold coloured metal (which improves the locket’s strength and durability).
The locket measures 2.5cms height (including the bale but excluding the top suspension ring) and it has a maximum width of 2cms. The locket weighs 5.7g.
As is sometimes the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks, but the locket has been professionally tested and is made of 9ct gold ‘back and front’ (see above for detail).
This antique locket is around 150 years old and is in very good condition for its age, with no dents or damage and showing just light signs of age / general wear. The inside of the locket is empty and shows some signs of age and use. The locket opens easily and closes securely with a click.
